To register to vote, a person must sign a voter declaration attesting that:

I am a U.S. Citizen
I will have been a resident of North Carolina and this county for 30 days before the election.
I will be at least 18 years old by the next general election.
I am not registered, nor will I vote, in any other county or state.
If I have been convicted of a felony, my rights of citizenship have been restored.

To register:

Go to your county Board of Elections. View a list of elections offices by county.

But maybe you can't make it to the elections board. No problem.

Mail it to your county Board of Elections office. Again, use the elections offices list.

But let's say you don't want to print out the form and mail it. You can also register to vote every time you do business with the following programs and agencies:

Work First
Women, Infants and Children (WIC)
Food Stamps
Medicaid
Services for the Blind
Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services
Vocational Rehabilitation
Governor's Advocacy Council for Persons with Disabilities
Employment Security Commission
DMV

Okay. So let's say you didn't register when you got your driver's license. You don't have any business with the other agencies and you don't feel like mailing in a form or dropping by your county Board of Elections. You could pick up a form at a public library and high school. So get registered already.

Once you have registered, you can check or verify which precinct or district you are in by searching your name on your voter registration. You could also search other people's names, if you wanted to know whether someone registered as a Democrat or Republican.
